66,876 Americans Call on Congress and President Obama to Invest in Clean, Affordable Transportation Options

Senators Barbara Boxer, James Inhofe, David Vitter and Max Baucus released a joint statement yesterday outlining principles for Senate legislation on surface transportation.  As the Senate moves forward on transportation legislation, 66,876 Americans called on Congress and the Administration to develop a transportation system for the 21st century that ends our dependence on oil, cuts pollution and provides clean, efficient and affordable transportation options.

Today, the League of Conservation Voters, Rails-to-Trails Conservancy and the Sierra Club delivered a petition to Chairman Boxer (D-CA) of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, Chairman Mica (R-FL) of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, and President Obama that demonstrates there is a growing chorus of Americans calling for more balanced transportation options – including transit, rail, biking and walking – to meet the needs of today’s communities.

"With Americans suffering at the pump and one year removed from the worst oil spill disaster in our nation’s history, it is time for Congress and the President to write a transportation bill that invests in smart transit options that break our dependence on oil," said Michael Brune, Executive Director of the Sierra Club.

What Americans want from these investments are roads that are in good repair and safe for all users, opportunities to access efficient public transportation and trains, and safe, convenient routes for bicycling and walking. “Unfortunately, some in Congress aim to turn back the clock more than 40 years to a time when the federal government was only interested in building more and bigger highways,” added Gene Karpinski, President of the League of Conservation Voters. “Americans across the country are calling out loud and clear for a transportation system that reduces our dangerous oil dependence, cleans up our air, and puts our country back to work.”

Keith Laughlin, President of Rails-to-Trails Conservancy said the petition “shows that Americans want clean, healthy, safe and affordable transportation options.  Those in Congress who contemplate cutting Transportation Enhancements and other programs that deliver these choices are out of touch.”

Petition language:
America needs a transportation system that ends our dependence on oil,
cuts pollution, and provides clean, efficient, and affordable transportation options
while putting the country back to work.
