LCV Statement on Administration’s Proposed Forest Planning Rule

WASHINGTON - Today U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack announced the release of the U.S. Forest Service’s proposed Forest Planning Rule, which will govern how our national forests are managed for decades to come.  These critical public lands—approximately 155 National Forests and 20 National Grasslands totaling some 193 million acres—comprise 8.5 percent of the total U.S. land area and provide vital fish and wildlife habitat, clean drinking water, and first-rate outdoor recreation opportunities for millions of Americans. In response to the Obama Administration’s announcement, LCV Legislative Representative Alex Taurel released the following statement:

“While the Obama Administration’s proposal does recognize the importance of protecting wildlife, safeguarding watersheds, and using sound science to manage our national forests, it unfortunately does not go far enough in requiring that these elements guide how our forests are managed.  The result is too much discretion and far too few binding standards to ensure the viability of wildlife and the protection of drinking water that millions of Americans depend on. We think the Administration can do better for our forests, and we will continue pressing them to do just that.”
