LCV Statement on Interior Secretary Salazar’s Grand Canyon Uranium Mining Announcement

WASHINGTON – League of Conservation Voters President Gene Karpinski issued the following statement on Interior Secretary Ken Salazar’s announcement addressing how the Bureau of Land Management intends to manage one million acres of land around the Grand Canyon that are at risk of an explosion of new uranium mining:

“We applaud Secretary Salazar’s intent to protect one million acres of natural splendor around the Grand Canyon from dirty and dangerous uranium mining for the next twenty years. Extending the current ‘timeout’ on new uranium mining claims will protect tourism related jobs, drinking water for millions downstream, and critical wildlife habitat. We urge the Secretary to follow through on his plan to protect the full million acres around America’s greatest natural wonder in the final Environmental Impact Statement, and ask Congress to reform the outdated General Mining Act of 1872 which leaves these treasured lands open to destructive mining operations.”
