LCV Statement on Legislative Efforts to Block EPA
WASHINGTON – League of Conservation Voters President Gene Karpinski issued the following statement on the introduction of legislation this week to block the EPA from enforcing commonsense safeguards to curb pollution and protect public health:
“It is absolutely reprehensible that Energy & Commerce committee Chairman Upton and Senator Inhofe, Ranking Member of the Environment & Public Works committee, have introduced legislation to block the EPA from doing its job: enforcing commonsense safeguards to curb pollution and protect public health. After closed door meetings with energy industry lobbyists and well over a million dollars in campaign cash from the oil companies between them, it’s hardly a surprise that these two are actively working to protect Big Oil’s profits at the expense of public health. This dangerous legislation comes on the heels of similar bills introduced by Senator Rockefeller and by Senator Barrasso.
It is imperative that the EPA continues its work to combat pollution, protect the air we breathe and hold polluters accountable. We call on members of Congress to strongly oppose these harmful bills and any other attempt to block, weaken, or delay the continued implementation of the Clean Air Act’s necessary public health protections.”
