LCV Statement on the EPA’s Cross-State Air Pollution Rule
WASHINGTON - Today, the Environmental Protection Agency finalized a long overdue update to clean air standards that will protect public health by setting stronger limits on toxic air pollution from power plants that contribute to smog and fine particle pollution. The Cross-State Air Pollution Rule will specifically target pollution that crosses state borders and will make it easier for states in the eastern half of the United States to protect public health. Among other significant benefits, this rule is estimated to save up to 34,000 lives a year.
LCV President Gene Karpinski released the following statement in response:
“We applaud the EPA for providing a long overdue update to these necessary clean air standards. The benefits of these efforts to curb toxic air pollution have proven time and again to greatly outweigh the costs, and we commend the agency for taking this important step forward. By finalizing this rule, the EPA will help reduce the spread of harmful pollution across state borders, providing millions of Americans with cleaner air and water in their own cities and across the country.”
