LCV and State Partners Launch $100K Radio Ad Campaign in Five Districts

Ad Targets Representatives for Voting for Legislation that Blocks EPA Scientists from Enforcing Air Pollution Limits

WASHINGTON – Today, the League of Conservation Voters and state partners in Pennsylvania, Michigan and Montana jointly launched a $100,000 radio ad campaign in five districts targeting representatives for their vote for an amendment to the House spending measure that blocks scientists at the EPA from enforcing safeguards for mercury pollution.

“The EPA has a responsibility under the law to set air pollution limits that protect the public’s health and hold polluters accountable, and it is simply wrong for politicians to interfere by blocking scientists at the EPA from doing their job,” said LCV President Gene Karpinski. “Scientists, not politicians, should determine our air pollution limits.”

The radio ads will be running in 10 media markets and are complemented by online advertising and phone calls into the district to inform constituents of their representative’s vote. LCV is joined by Conservation Voters of Pennsylvania, the Michigan League of Conservation Voters and Montana Conservation Voters in this effort. The ad references House roll call vote 86 which was offered by Rep. John Carter (R-TX).*

Radio ads will be running in the following districts:

PA-11 (Barletta):

This ad will be running in the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Allentown-Bethlehem and Sunbury media markets.

ANNCR:  What do your kids, our congressman, and mercury poisoning have in common?

More than you might think.

You see after taking nearly thirty thousand dollars from oil and gas companies [during his last election] - Congressman Lou Barletta voted to block the enforcement of a vital mercury pollution law.

They buried it in a spending bill and passed it in the middle of the night. Letting polluters off the hook. And letting mercury back into our air and water. Mercury, that causes brain damage in kids.

Maybe Barletta was hoping Pennsylvania parents wouldn’t notice. Well…we did.

And we don’t like politicians interfering in decisions that should be made by experts. Scientists whose job it is to protect the water our kids drink and the air they breathe. But Lou Barletta thinks he knows better.

Congressman Barletta should stop playing politics with our kids’ health.  And start looking out for Pennsylvania families.

A message from the Conservation Voters of Pennsylvania.
