LCV Action Fund Endorses Gabrielle Giffords for Re-Election in Arizona’s 8th District
Washington, DC - The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect candidates who will implement sound environmental policies, today announced its endorsement of Gabrielle Giffords (AZ-08) for re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives. Rep. Giffords has an outstanding 91% LCV lifetime environmental score and received a perfect 100% on LCV’s 2009 National Environmental Scorecard.*
“Congresswoman Giffords’ leadership in the House has been absolutely critical to passing the clean energy jobs legislation Americans really need,” said LCV President Gene Karpinski. “We are proud to endorse Congresswoman Giffords for re-election because she understands that the policies needed to build a clean energy economy that puts Americans back to work are the same policies that reduce our dependence on foreign oil, curb harmful global warming pollution and make our nation more secure.”
Rep. Giffords voted for the House-passed American Clean Energy and Security Act that would help create nearly 30,000 clean energy jobs in Arizona**, reduce carbon pollution and increase energy independence. She also supported the single largest investment in clean energy in history – more than $80 billion for energy efficiency, renewable energy and public transit in the economic recovery package, with substantial investments going to Arizona’s 8th district to create jobs improving energy efficiency and building public transportation.
As a member of the House Science and Technology Committee, Rep. Giffords has promoted solar initiatives in an effort to make Southern Arizona the “Solar-con Valley" of the nation. Combining this committee work with her seat on the Armed Services Committee, she has been a strong promoter of increased use of renewable energy at military installations around the U.S. She is also a member of the Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition.
Rep. Giffords is also featured on LCVAF’s GiveGreen website, http://lcv.org/givegreen, the only bundling website devoted exclusively to raising money for environmental champions and candidates.
