LCV Action Fund Endorses Harry Teague for Re-Election in New Mexico’s 2nd District
Washington, DC - The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect candidates who will implement sound environmental policies, today announced its endorsement of Harry Teague (NM-02) for re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives. Rep. Teague received a solid 86% score on LCV’s 2009 National Environmental Scorecard, his first as a member of Congress.
“Congressman Teague has quickly become a strong advocate in Congress in ensuring that America leads the 21st century’s clean energy economy,” said LCV Action Fund President Gene Karpinski. “We are proud to endorse Congressman Teague for re-election because he is fighting for policies that will not only build a clean energy economy that gets New Mexico’s workers back on the job, but will also reduce our dangerous dependence on foreign oil and curb harmful pollution.”
Rep. Teague supported the single largest investment in clean energy in history: more than $80 billion for energy efficiency, renewable energy and public transit in the economic recovery package, with substantial investments going to job-creating clean energy and energy efficiency projects in New Mexico’s 2nd district.
"New Mexico's abundant and diverse energy resources can be translated into thousands of new energy jobs if we adopt my Do it all and Do it in America energy policy," said Teague. "I am proud to fight for New Mexico's economy by moving forward with key investments in clean energy."
One of Rep. Teague’s highest priorities is spurring investment in job-creating renewable energy projects, and this dedication can be seen through his efforts to bring wind and solar projects to Southern New Mexico. He authored H.R. 451 to extend the Renewable Energy Production Tax Credit, and this bill was passed into law as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
Rep. Teague’s opponent, former three-term Congressman Steve Pearce, earned an appalling 3% lifetime LCV score during his time in office. Pearce has been named to LCV’s trademark “Dirty Dozen” list of polluter-friendly candidates twice (in 2008 and 2010). Pearce was also named one of the “Most Corrupt Members of Congress” by the watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington due to his habit of trading legislative favors in exchange for campaign contributions.
Rep. Teague is featured on LCVAF’s GiveGreen website, http://lcv.org/givegreen, the only bundling website devoted exclusively to raising money for environmental champions and candidates. The non-partisan LCV Scorecard is a nationally accepted yardstick used to rate Members of Congress on clean energy, public health and environmental issues. Based on key conservation votes in the House and Senate, it is often used by the media to quickly describe a Member’s position. For more information, visit http://lcv.org/scorecard
