LCV and NWF Action Fund Launch $200K TV Ad Campaign Against Jeff Miller

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the League of Conservation Voters (LCV), which works to turn environmental values into national priorities, and the National Wildlife Federation Action Fund, launched a $200,000 ad buy in North Carolina’s 11th district hitting House candidate Jeff Miller for his campaign cash from the special interests. The TV ad will be running in the Greenville-Spartanburg and Chattanooga media markets, including WLOS-TV in Asheville.

“If elected, Jeff Miller would be bought by so many special interests that his serving the public interest will certainly fall by the wayside,” said Tony Massaro, LCV Senior Vice President for Political Affairs. “While Heath Shuler is standing up to corporate special interests and challenging them to ‘bring it on’, Jeff Miller would rather ask ‘what do you want’.”

Both the LCV Action Fund and NWF Action Fund have endorsed Congressman Heath Shuler for re-election.

“Look, if the fishing on a trout stream’s gone bad, you don’t just stand there with your rod in your hand and keep casting the same fly. You find something that works. Heath Shuler’s not a man afraid to admit that our energy policies are working against us and we need a new direction to protect our natural resources, get us off paying foreign governments for oil, and create jobs here in North Carolina,” said lifelong North Carolina sportsman Richard Mode of the NWF Action Fund, which advocates for the conservation interests of hunters, anglers and outdoor enthusiasts from all walks of life and political stripes. “That’s what we need in Washington – someone who’ll stand up against polluters and special interests to protect our mountains, streams, wildlife habitats, and coastal resources."

Americans for Job Security has reported spending $750,525 in a campaign opposing Shuler.

(Center for Responsive Politics, Accessed 10/12/10)

“Americans for Job Security was founded in 1997 by the American Insurance Association, a trade organization that promotes the industry’s position on health care and product liability legislation.

…The American Insurance Association gave $1 million in 1997 to help launch Americans for Job Security. They recently received another cash infusion of $2 million from the American Insurance Association….”  (Seattle Post-Intelligencer 8/31/00; Roll Call 4/13/02, 7/13/98)

“Pharmaceutical companies were also the primary funders of Americans for Job Security. AJS, moreover, was only one of several misleadingly labeled health industry groups involved in the campaign.” (American Prospect 11/30/02)
