Ad Hits Walberg for Allegiance to Big Oil While in Congress
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the League of Conservation Voters (LCV), which works to turn environmental values into national priorities, and the National Wildlife Federation Action Fund, launched a $50,000 ad buy in Michigan’s 7th district hitting former Rep. Tim Walberg for his allegiance to Big Oil during his single term in Congress. The radio ad will be running in the Ann Arbor, Battle Creek, Lansing and Detroit media markets.
“It was obvious that Tim Walberg represented Big Oil instead of his constituents, so they sent him packing after only two years,” said Tony Massaro, LCV Senior Vice President for Political Affairs. “While Mark Schauer has proven his commitment to holding corporate polluters accountable, Tim Walberg has proven his commitment to protecting Big Oil’s profits at the expense of clean energy jobs for Michigan workers. We don’t need another two years to know that Tim Walberg is the wrong choice for Michigan’s 7th district.”
Ex- Rep. Walberg is also a member of LCV’s 2010 Dirty Dozen. Walberg's campaigns have received more than $118,00 from Big Oil and other energy interests. During his single term, Walberg voted against repealing tax breaks for Big Oil, against increasing the use of renewable energy and against efforts to help American drivers go further on a gallon of gas. Walberg also opposed extending tax incentives for clean energy that would help create thousands of new jobs in Michigan. Walberg’s lifetime LCV score is a dismal 5%.
"Blind allegiance to Big Oil's lobbyists in Washington is what's led to disasters like the Kalamazoo River oil spill," said Sue Brown, executive director of the National Wildlife Federation Action Fund. "Mark Schauer understands that investing in clean energy will protect Michigan's natural resources while creating thousands of jobs."

LCV's trademark Dirty Dozen program targets candidates for Congress — regardless of party affiliation — who consistently vote against clean energy and conservation and are running in races in which LCV has a serious chance to affect the outcome. Since 1996, more than 60 percent of the Dirty Dozen have been defeated. See the full 2010 list and learn more at http://lcv-archive.pub30.convio.net/dirtydozen
The non-partisan LCV Scorecard is a nationally accepted yardstick used to rate Members of Congress on clean energy, public health and environmental issues. Based on key conservation votes in the House and Senate, it is often used by the media to quickly describe a Member’s position. For more information, visit http://lcv.org/scorecard
