LCV Applauds the Secure Water Facilities Act
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Senator Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) introduced a comprehensive legislative package that would help prevent terrorist attacks on America’s chemical, drinking water, and wastewater facilities. This legislation requires plants to assess their vulnerability and develop plans to address those vulnerabilities, and requires the highest-risk facilities to increase public safety and protect our environment.
LCV President Gene Karpinski released the following statement on the introduction:
“We applaud Senator Lautenberg for introducing the Secure Water Facilities Act, legislation which will help decrease the environmental and security risks posed by America’s chemical, drinking water and wastewater facilities. This common-sense legislation will protect American families and communities across the country by helping to prevent terrorist attacks on these facilities and the environmental and public health disasters that would ensue.
The Gulf Coast disaster teaches us that we must require best practices from U.S. industries and this vital legislation will ensure that companies address those vulnerabilities posed by our chemical and water plants.
We look forward to working with the Senate to pass the Secure Water Facilities Act.”
