New $11 Million Campaign to Ensure Action on Comprehensive Energy & Climate Policy This Summer
LCV, SEIU, Sierra Club, VoteVets.org Action Fund to Target Key Senators Before, After Vote on Energy & Climate Bill
WASHINGTON – In the midst of the worst oil disaster in our nation's history, the League of Conservation Voters (LCV), Service Employees International Union (SEIU), Sierra Club and VoteVets.org Action Fund today announced an $11 million campaign to help ensure that the U.S. Senate takes decisive action on comprehensive energy and climate legislation this summer. This unprecedented effort is one of the largest coordinated efforts to date to educate the public on where key Senators stand on the historic fight to put America back in control of our energy future with legislation that creates new clean energy jobs, reduces our dangerous addiction to oil and curbs harmful carbon pollution.
“This diverse set of groups has come together because we are at a pivotal moment in which senators face a stark choice: they can side with the Big Oil companies or fight for a clean energy future,” said LCV President Gene Karpinski. “And with this effort, we will make sure that constituents in key states know which side of this historic debate their senators choose.”
“For families who have lost hope because their industry is dying, clean energy is a new path forward which can create good middle class jobs on which you can raise a family and send your kids to college,” said SEIU president Mary Kay Henry. “If Senators care about working families, this is a no-brainer.”
The effort, which kicks-off next week with TV ads in key states, will focus on senators from both parties before and after an expected vote this summer on a comprehensive energy and climate bill. The multi-media effort will both call out those senators who stand with Big Oil and other corporate polluters and praise those senators who stand with the majority of Americans by supporting a bold clean energy and climate bill.
"The communities of the Gulf are going to be paying the environmental and economic costs of a failed energy policy for years to come," said Michael Brune, Sierra Club Executive Director. "Instead of challenging the laws that clean our air and reduce global warming pollution, the Senate must challenge itself to take responsibility, end our oil dependence and pass strong, comprehensive climate and energy legislation this year. We’re joining today to say to Senators, if you act, we’ve got your back, but we will also be calling out those who continue to bail out Big Oil and weaken environmental protections."
“The equation here is very simple. We can keep funding our enemies through our addiction to oil that forces us to buy from states with ties to terror and drives up the oil market for states like Iran, or we can protect America,” said Jon Soltz, Iraq War Veteran and Chairman of VoteVets.org. “Only by passing clean energy can we move ourselves to an American-made, renewable energy economy. This effort will make very clear which Senators choose which course.”
